can partially expand the outline to show the detail for a particular region by clicking one
of the plus-sign buttons. Collapsing the outline to level 1 shows only the headers and the
Grand Total row.

Excel can create outlines in both directions. In the preceding examples, the outline is a row
(vertical) outline. Figure 27.4 shows the same model after a column (horizontal) outline was
added by selecting the columns and using Data ➪ Outline ➪ Group ➪ Auto Outline. When
both outlines are in effect, Excel also displays outline controls at the top.
