1364 The Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ, According to St. Luke

37 And when he was now coming near the
descent of mount Olivet, the whole multitude of
his disciples began with joy to praise God with
a loud voice, for all the mighty works they had
seen,

38 Saying: Blessed be the king who cometh
in the name of the Lord, peace in heaven, and
glory on high!

39 And some of the Pharisees, from amongst
the multitude, said to him: Master, rebuke thy
disciples.

40 To whom he said: I say to you, that if these
shall hold their peace, the stones will cry out.

41 And when he drew near, seeing the city, he
wept over it, saying:

42 If thou also hadst known, and that in this
thy day, the things that are to thy peace; but
now they are hidden from thy eyes.

43 For the days shall come upon thee, and
thy enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and
compass thee round, and straiten thee on every
side,

44 And beat thee flat to the ground, and thy
children who are in thee: and they shall not leave
in thee a stone upon a stone: because thou hast
not known the time of thy visitation.

45 And entering into the temple, he began to
cast out them that sold therein, and them that
bought.

46 Saying to them: It is written: My house is
the house of prayer. But you have made it a den
of thieves.

47 And he was teaching daily in the temple.
And the chief priests and the scribes and the
rulers of the people sought to destroy him:

48 And they found not what to do to him: for
all the people were very attentive to hear him.

Chapter 20

And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as
he was teaching the people in the temple, and
preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the
scribes, with the ancients, met together,
2 And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what
authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he
that hath given thee this authority?
3 And Jesus answering, said to them: I will
also ask you one thing. Answer me:
4 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or
of men?
5 But they thought within themselves, saying:
If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why
then did you not believe him?
6 But if we say, Of men, the whole people will
stone us: for they are persuaded that John was
a prophet.
7 And they answered, that they knew not
whence it was.
8 And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell
thee by what authority I do these things.
9 And he began to speak to the people this
parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and
let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for
a long time.
10 And at the season he sent a servant to the
husbandmen, that they should give him of the
fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent
him away empty.
11 And again he sent another servant. But
they beat him also, and treating him reproach-
fully, sent him away empty.
12 And again he sent the third: and they
wounded him also, and cast him out.
13 Then the lord of the vineyard said: What
shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may
be, when they see him, they will reverence him.
14 Whom when the husbandmen saw, they
