LACTATION
With lactation, elevated prolactin levels with exclusive breastfeeding inhibit
pulsatile secretion of GnRH from the hypothalamus. Effectiveness is dependent
on the frequency (at least every 4-6 hours day and night) and intensity (infant
suckling rather than pumping) of milk removal.
Advantages: enhanced maternal/infant health, bonding, and nutrition; readily
available and inexpensive; needs no supplies; free of systemic side effects;
acceptable to all religious groups
Disadvantages: high failure rate if not exclusively breastfeeding; only
reliable for up to six months, no protection against STDs
