“Hazards and/or side effects not known for proper therapeutic dosages” (PH2). CAN cautions that
high doses can cause irritation, numbness, salivation, and tremors. Because of irritant and uterine
activity, in vitro and in vivo, its use in pregnancy and lactation is to be avoided. Said to be toxic
parenterally but nontoxic orally (to 90,000 mg/kg in rats and rabbits). May potentiate pharmaceutical
sedatives (CAN).

JAPANESE ATRACTYLODES
(Atractylodes japonica (Koidz.) Kitam) ++

Some data also apply to Atractylodes ovata in HH3. Perry treats all three of the species covered
here as one from a medicinal point of view for some indications: A. japonica, A. lancea, and A.
macrocephala, I entered those indications for all three. Perhaps they should be aggregated, perhaps
not. HH3 treated all three separately, but for reasons that escape me, PH2 left out A. macrocephala,
perhaps the better known of the trio.
Activities (Japanese Atractylodes) — Analgesic (1; HH3); Antibacterial (1; HH3; LAF); Anti-
cholinergic (1; X11263255); Antidepressant (f; LAF); Antiedemic (1; HH3); Antiinflammatory
