Again, it’s about balance.
What Are the Bad Carbs?
Believe me, sugar is the devil. It’s here to ruin you. If you don’t eliminate it from
your diet, you will never achieve the perfect 10 physique you dream of. The
same goes for refined carbs. Want to be a fit man? Well, you have to avoid those
fatfree muffins and low-fat cakes. ‘‘Anti-nutrients” like these are prohibited on
the Perfect 10 Diet, and they should be completely eliminated from your life.
You take in bad carbs every time you drink a soda or a beer, or eat products
made with refined white flour or high-fructose corn syrup-laden low-fat
products. To your body, this junk food is no different from pure table sugar.
When you eat these things, your bloodstream is flooded with sugar, which causes
an instant spike in insulin levels. After this spike, your blood sugar level will
crash, and you’ll be overcome with hunger. That crash is the strange feeling of
tiredness or sleepiness you probably feel after a big meal of pasta or pancakes.
This leads to a vicious cycle, because subsequently you’ll crave more sugar to
fix that crash.
Sugar is like crack, but without its appetite-suppressing qualities. You’ll eat a
single cookie, and before you know it, you won’t be able to resist having one
more, and then another, and another. An important part of any recovery for
addiction is taking one meal at a time. Don’t torture yourself with thoughts like,
“I can never eat cookies again” or “I can’t have pasta or pizza.” Instead, set mini
goals for yourself, like I’ll treat myself to a cookie every now and then. Almost
everything, including a scoop of ice cream from Häagen-Dazs, is all right in
moderation. You’ll feel motivated, instead of deprived. If you find yourself
tempted to have more, just envision the damaging effects of sugar on your
organs, mood, hormones, overall appearance, and sex life.
Okay, that’s enough melodrama. My point is that sugar is a treat, and you
must pretty much eliminate it from your diet if you truly want to have a perfect
10 physique.
It’s important to know that sugar is everywhere, and it hides behind many
different names. See Figure 4.2 for examples.
