Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
The role of DHEA in weight loss is controversial, but as I previously discussed,
correction of DHEA can lead to an improvement in many of your other
hormones. How do you know if you have low levels? How’s your sex drive? Are
you fatigued all the time, but your doctor hasn’t figured it out yet? The problem
could be DHEA. If you suspect a DHEA problem, a simple blood test for DHEA
sulfate level will reveal the answer. For men, normal levels are 400 to 500
mcg/dL. For women, normal levels are 370 to 430 mcg/ dL. When we get old,
DHEA levels drop (Fig. 13.2). Supplementation is necessary. You can purchase
DHEA in pill form (25 to 50 milligrams per day) over the counter, but don’t take
DHEA if you have a history of genital cancer with metastasis. Also, keep an eye
on your levels. If you take too much, you may experience oily hair and skin, and
maybe even acne. Women who are deficient are less likely to tolerate high doses
of DHEA supplementation ion, so smaller doses may be necessary.
