That’s if your levels are low of course.
Low testosterone levels are prevalent among older men, yet this condition is
often ignored or goes undiagnosed for years. Men with low testosterone are
often misdiagnosed with fatigue of an unknown cause, depression, or anxiety. In
reality, the problem is a low level of testosterone.
The benefits of testosterone supplementation therapy outweigh the potential
drawbacks, especially with the appropriate delivery, dose, and monitoring. To
get started, get to know your levels. Testosterone level should be measured in the
morning, since it tends to be lower (by about 15 percent) in the afternoon. If
your total testosterone level is 270, which is low, your doctor may tell you, “It’s
in the normal range.” Normal for whom? An 80-year-old man? You need to have
much higher levels to feel good, have harder erections, and have the energy of a
20-year-old man. You always need to compare your level to the reference range
of a young man in his 20s, not the lab reference for your age group. Do you want
to have the normal testosterone level of an 80-year-old man? I don’t think so.
The most common imbalance in aging men is a decrease in testosterone while
the levels of estrogen, the female sex hormone, remain the same or sometimes
increase. Your wife may appreciate this feminine side of you she’s never seen,
but it’s not a good sign if your estrogen level is higher than hers. A testosterone-
estrogen imbalance is the direct cause of many of the problems associated with
aging, including benign enlargement of the prostate. You can also develop
enlarged male breasts and that can affect your social life.
I know this is the Perfect 10 Diet, but my concern here is not how society
perceives you. I’m more concerned about your declining testosterone levels and
this estrogen excess. Low testosterone can translate to early Alzheimer’s disease,
hip fractures, and incontinence caused by an enlarged prostate. That certainly
doesn’t fall into perfect 10 health.
So what do you do if you’re a guy with a testosterone-estrogen imbalance?
You need to follow the Perfect 10 Diet so that you can lose weight; this
prevents the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. You should stop drinking
coffee altogether, because coffee can accelerate the conversion from testosterone
to estrogen by 60 percent. Alcohol should go too.
You also need supplementation to keep testosterone from further breaking into
estrogen. How do you do that? Take zinc, 100 milligrams a day. The mineral
zinc inhibits the aromatase enzyme that converts testosterone to excess estrogen.
Seafood is rich in zinc, so now you know why seafood is a favorite protein
source on the Perfect 10 Diet. I also recommend taking chrysin, a bioflavonoid
that has shown potential as a natural aromatase inhibitor at a dose of 750
milligrams, along with piperine at a dose of 7.5 milligrams. A supplement called
