matter. Remember, saturated fat and cholesterol in food has no
relationship to heart disease. It’s the manufactured fats that clog
arteries, not cholesterolrich food or saturated fats. What you should
avoid are trans fats; there is no safe limit for them.
I like to eat French fries once in a while. How should I cook them?
I discourage eating deep-fried food at all times. If you must fry any
food, use ghee, coconut oil, palm oil, or butter. I also recommend
macadamia oil, which has a neutral taste and a high burning point.
How much red meat (including beef, lamb, and pork) or processed
meat can I eat?
Researchers define high consumption of red meat and its relationship
to colon cancer as 3 or more ounces of red meat per day for a man.
This is the size of a fast-food hamburger. For a woman, the amount
is 2 or more ounces. For processed meat (bacon, sausage, hot dogs,
ham, and cold cuts), the amount is only 1 ounce. A slice of bologna
weighs 1 ounce, as do 3 slices of cooked bacon. If you’re eating red
meat on a daily basis, try to cut this back to once every 2 weeks. If
you’re eating red meat weekly, try to scale it back to once every 3 to
4 weeks. When you do eat red meat, have it rare or medium, and
never well done. Avoid processed meat at all times.
I usually eat breakfast after leaving home. Any tips on how to eat on
the run?
Boil a few eggs the night before and keep them in the refrigerator.
Have them with a piece of cheese for breakfast, and you won’t have
to eat something fast when you’re in a rush. Another idea is to
always keep fresh fruit in the house and take some with you when
you leave home.
