RED-MAPLE HARDWOOD SWAMP
This broadly-defined community has the red maple (Acer rubrum) as the dominant canopy tree
or as a co-dominant species with other mixed hardwoods. A common community throughout
the five boroughs, it occurs in poorly drained depressions, usually on inorganic soils (Edinger et
al 2002). The landscapes can vary in elevation and the amount of time they are flooded
throughout the year.
Examples Include: Bronx Park (BX), Alley Pond (QU), Clay Pit Ponds (SI), Bloomingdale (SI).
