D. Upland Forest Communities
Upland forest communities are plant communities characterized by a tree canopy cover of at
least 60%. The majority of the forests in the New York City area occur on moist, well-drained
soils.
MIXED OAK-HICKORY FOREST
This hardwood forest occurs on well-drained sites with loam or sandy loam soils. These
communities can be found on ridgetops, upper slopes, or south- or west-facing slopes in the
coastal lowlands. The tree canopy cover is at least 60% with a moderate density of hickories
mixed with a two or more species of oaks.
Examples Include: Pelham Bay-Hunter Island (BX), Prospect Park (BK), Inwood Hill (MN), Forest
Park (QU), High Rock (SI).
