OAK-TULIP TREE FOREST

This mesophytic forest is a mixture of hardwoods and softwoods. The dominant species of oak

and tulip poplar are usually joined by the black birch, beech or red maple. Moist, well-drained

soils will support a diverse understory of shrubs and herbaceous flora. Tulip poplars, with their

very straight trunks, can reach over 100 feet tall. Their magnificent form helps to bring a natural

giant to the famed New York City skyline.

Examples Include: Pelham Bay-Hunter Island (BX), Prospect Park (BK), Inwood Hill (MN), Forest

Park (QU), Bloomingdale (SI).
