These are just a few
of the comments
made in front of the
cover section of our
edit wall in the offi ce
this month: “Turquoise
water or cobalt sea?”
“Palapas or cabañas?”
“Which one makes you
want to go there
NOW?” “I think I need
to see a sailboat ...”
On the World Series...
Another year, another baseball
season came and went with
no playoff action. Who needs
a World Series bid, anyway?
OK, so we could’ve really used
one in this town, this year (or
any year), but still, I’m psyched
for the World Series that we
are getting, the America’s Cup
World Series, in San Diego Bay
this month. The best sailing teams from around the world are sending their multi-
million AC45 catamarans to battle Larry Ellison’s Oracle racing team in the fi nal
series leading up to the America’s Cup fi nal in San Francisco next year. This is a
series our city was made for. With bayfront grandstand
seating set up on the embarcadero, huge outdoor
fl atscreens (each boat is mounted with a dozen
cameras) to show live races, high-tech wind
speed indicators, and helicopters covering the
race from the air, San Diego Bay is the ultimate
downtown stadium. (Until next year, PETCO!)

❯❯ FROM THE EDITOR
THREE THINGS
I DIDN’T KNOW
UNTIL THIS ISSUE:
❯❯ The city of San Diego borrowed
$100 million to fix roads a few years
ago and they have only been able to
spend about half of it. So $50 million
bucks in jobs has been “held up” for
nothing other than
“bureaucracy” during
a period of high
unemployment and
financial distress in
our city. Nice.
❯❯ “Cuddle Class”
is a real thing, available on Air New
Zealand. You book both the aisle
and the window, then pay just a tad
extra for the middle seat, so you
and your sweetie get the whole row
to yourselves.
❯❯ Pizzeria Mozza
is coming to San
Diego! Maybe we
get Mario Batali for
a cover shoot next
year? Let me know
what you think at
[email protected].
¡VIVA VOLARIS!
Surfers and savvy travelers have been
flying out of Tijuana for years, but now it’s
time for the rest of us to get on board. I
flew Volaris airlines from Tijuana to La Paz
for one of this month’s travel stories (page
98) and found it quite awesome. Less than
$200 roundtrip, free Coronas, super sleek,
modern planes, direct into La Paz. See
more of what I learned about flying out of
Tijuana on page 101.
