COX BUSINESS CONGRATU TES THE CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION AND
NONPROFIT BUSINESS HONOREES AT THE 2011 TOP TECH EXEC AWARDS

NONPROFIT
BUSINESS
GARY DEVAN
CIO | Mission Federal
Credit Union

“This event is a great
tribute to some very
talented people in San
Diego who dedicate
their lives to innovation
and process improvement. What meant the most
to me was the acknowledgment of our IT staff’s
accomplishments over the past year. I am honored
to be recognized this way.”
Gary Devan has adeptly led the efforts to upgrade
Mission Federal’s technology infrastructure to increase
network and storage capacity, lower costs, reduce
carbon footprint, improve member services, and
streamline internal procedures. Under Devan, Mission
Federal has migrated to a virtual server environment for
90 percent of its servers, enhanced its network
capacity, strengthened internal and external network
security, converted 30 percent of existing paper
documents to electronic forms while completing
programming to eliminate paper forms for new
accounts, and implemented a virtualized storage
solution to improve storage management. Devan also
implemented a newly re-designed website for greater
membership acquisition and improved service delivery,
and launched an entirely new youth-oriented website,
missionfedmpower.com.

CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION
JOHN MERRITT
Vice President of IT | San Diego
YMCA of San Diego

“Apart from the humbling experience of being
honored in such a tech-savvy town, this recogni-
tion also means good things for the not-for-profi t
world where tech is often an afterthought. It
shows that not-for-profi t organizations are taking
technology seriously in support of their mission.
I think the Top Tech Event is a fun and unique
opportunity to recognize a group of individuals
that don’t often see the light of day. Cheers to
Cox and San Diego Magazine for recognizing the
unsung heroes of the business world.”
For 20 years, John Merritt has worked
diligently to leverage both technological and
human resources to meet the needs of this
rapidly growing organization. Merritt built an
impressive IT infrastructure virtually from the
ground up, providing IT support and services that
directly benefi t over 300,000 YMCA members,
participants, staff, and volunteers. As a leader, he excels in anticipating
needs and identifying proactive solutions. He has met the challenge of
maintaining IT standards for equipment, services, and infrastructure for
more than 18 major independent branches spread across the county,
each with diverse operating budgets. He has successfully unifi ed the
association’s IT infrastructure to the point where, no matter the size or
operating budget, every location works with the exact same computing
and networking equipment, wide area network, website, intranet site,
software licensing, IT asset technical support, and maintenance.
