more basic bunk configurations, which are a
bargain for groups.

campgrounds that are open from late May to
late October, depending on snow conditions.
Manzanita Lake is the only one with hot
showers.

Guests are greeted with fresh flowers and can
drift to sleep on feather beds after soaking in
claw-foot tubs. Certainly the best hotel in the
northern mountains, with a perfect marriage of
preservationist class and modern panache.

and you’ll be plagued with an existential
breakfast crisis: the potato and egg frittata

4 Woodsman Cabins & Lodge Motel $

have the Strawberry Valley Inn across the
street, the cluster of renovated mid-century
buildings that make up the Woodsman is the
mannish alternative. Taxidermy looks over the
reception area, where a fire keeps things warm
in the winter.

Try a tasty porter or the rich, amber-colored
Mountain High IPA. The latter is delicious, but
watch out – at 7% alcohol it has real kick.
