& Taverna Mediterranean $$
(%609-252-9680; 29 Hulfish St; mains $15-30;
h11:30am-10pm, to 11pm Fri & Sat) Centrally
located in Palmer Square, Mediterra is the sort
of upscale, contemporary place designed for a
college town, for visiting parents, flush students
and locals craving menus that highlight locally
sourced and organic ingredients. It’s worth
leaning towards the fish and small plates like
bruschetta.
5 Olives Bakery/Deli^ $
(22 Witherspoon St; sandwiches $7; h7am-
8pm) Visit Olives for reasonably priced,
healthy Mediterranean-style food with a Greek
emphasis – it’s like Whole Foods’ deli section
only with better selection and quality. There’s
very limited counter space so aim for take-out,
especially at lunch time when it’s crowded.

(%215-297-9260; http://www.blackbasshotel.com;
3774 River Rd, Lumberville; r wkdays/wkends
from $195/225; aW) Originally a small tavern
popular with Tory loyalists – that’s right, 1740s
Tories – this elegant and comfortable inn is
steeped in history. Extensively renovated in
2009 after falling on hard times, the antique
furnishings, memorabilia and artwork were
restored and mixed with contemporary
amenities. Only 6 miles north of New Hope,
most of the rooms have views of the Delaware
Canal and River which runs behind the property.
4 Porches on the Towpath B&B $$
(%215-862-3277; http://www.porchesnewhope.
com; 20 Fisher’s Alley; r from wkdays/wkends
$115/155) Romantic and quirky, this cozy
Victoriana with porches and canal views doesn’t
take itself too seriously (just like the inn’s
affable owner). It’s a relatively secluded spot
off the main drag with six uniquely designed
rooms in the main house and another six in an
atmospheric 19th-century carriage house.
