For those seeking a little bit of Brooklyn on the
Delaware, the Heron has reclaimed wood picnic
tables, tin ceilings and refined menu touting
locavore credentials. The oysters and fried
chicken are especially recommended. The best
tables are on the back deck overlooking the
river. Opening hours can be irregular so call in
advance.

Milford 3

Twin Lakes Modern American $$$

(%570-296-8094; 814 Twin Lakes Rd, Shohola;
mains $23-33; h6-10pm Thu-Sat, to 9pm Sun)

In Shohola, 8 miles northwest of Milford, this
husband-and-wife-run restaurant rivals any
NYC foodie destination. Even though you could
easily fill up on the excellent sourdough bread
and small plates like smoked fishcakes with
quinoa cucumber salad, save some room for the
beautifully plated fish and meat mains.

4 Hotel Fauchere Boutique Hotel $$$
(%570-409-1212; http://www.hotelfauchere.com; 401
Broad St; r incl breakfast from $200; aW) This
immaculately restored mid-19th century inn
offers luxurious amenities and sophisticated
decor – landscape paintings, wood floors and
banister – and a great restaurant/bar in the
basement called Bar Louis. There’s also the
Delmonico Room, a more formal restaurant with
a menu of locally sourced and hearty fare.

PA Side of the Gap 4

4 Deer Head Inn Inn $$
(%570-424-2000; http://www.deerheadinn.com; 5
Main St, Delaware Water Gap; r from $90; aW)
This four-story Victorian with wraparound
porch is only a few miles from the Gap itself
and just around the corner from the highway.
Furnishings in the eight comfortable rooms
don’t always match but it’s worth a stay,
especially for the top-flight live jazz music
Thursdays through Sundays.

4 Delaware Water
Gap Camping Camping $
(www.nps.gov/dewa; tent site from $15) River
camping – that is, traveling by canoe or kayak
with an overnight stay on an island – is a special
experience. Whether via boat or hiking – there’s
loads of campsites – come prepared with all
your food and cooking supplies and remember
to bear-proof everything at night.
