by Andrew that’s not

among his iconic works

is Snow Hill, a large

canvas that despite the

snowy, playful scene

somehow manages to

evoke menace and a

haunted quality. Also

Portrait of a Pig and the

trompe l’oeil paintings

in separate third-floor

galleries. The handsome

building is a converted

mill with pinewood

floors and walls of glass

overlooking the slow-

moving Brandywine

River. N.C.’s house and

studio are open to the

public on guided tours,

as are Andrew’s studio

and the Kuerner Farm,

the noticeable setting

for some of Andrew’s

most famous works.

He roamed there every

fall and winter for 70

years and found much

of his inspiration. Tours

of each site cost $8 in

addition to museum

admission, and can be

booked at and leave

from Brandywine River

Museum.

The Drive » Only a mile further

east on Rte 1 is Brandywine

Battlefield State Park; Batsto,

in the Wharton State Forest, is

about 66 miles further. Take Rte

100 south past lovely rolling

hills. Winterthur (see p242) is

close by off Rte 52. Take I-95

north to the Commodore Barry

Bridge over the Delaware, then

I-295 north towards Camden

and exit at US 30 east. It’s more
