5 Bube’s
Brewery Continental, Brewery $$
(www.bubesbrewery.com; 102 North Market
St, Mt Joy) This well-preserved 19th-century
German brewery-cum-restaurant complex is in
Mt Joy, 15 miles northwest of Lancaster off Rte
- It contains several atmospheric bars and
four separate dining rooms (one underground),
hosts costumed ‘feasts’ and, naturally, brews
its own beer.
5 Lancaster
Brewing Co American, Brewery $$
(302 N Plum St; mains $9-22; h11:30am-10pm)
Just around the corner from the Cork Factory
hotel, the bar here draws young neighborhood
regulars and the menu is a big step-up from
standard pub fare – rack of wild boar and
cranberry sausage is an example. But you can’t
beat specials like 35¢-wing night.
5 Ma(i)son French/Italian^ $$$
(%717-293-5060; http://www.maisonlancaster.com;
230 N Prince St; mains $25 ; h5-11pm Wed-Sat)
Every worthy current trend of the slowfood,
farm-to-table culinary movement is embodied
in this sophisticated, though of course rustically
furnished, Lancaster restaurant. It’s run by a
husband-and-wife team who like to keep things
local; they value the bounty from the area’s
farms and live above the restaurant. Expect
the menu to change with the seasons – it may
include meticulously prepared mains such as
Madeira-braised veal and wild nettle sausage
pasta. BYOB and reservations recommended.

Smoketown
5 Good ‘N Plenty
Restaurant American $$
(Intersection Rte 896 & Rte 340; mains $11;
h11:30am-8pm Mon-Sat, closed Jan; c)^
Sure, you’ll be dining with busloads of tourists
and your cardiologist might not approve, but
hunkering down at one of the picnic tables
here for a family-style meal ($21) is a lot of fun.
Besides the main dining room, which is the size
of a football field, there are a couple of other
mini-areas where you can order from an à la
carte menu.
4 Fulton Steamboat Inn Hotel $$
(%717-299-9999; 1 Hartman Bridge Rd; r from

landlocked Amish country seems like a gimmick
