farmland, then turn left onto
Maryland 107/Fisher Ave. After
about 5 miles, this will become
White’s Ferry Rd; follow it to
the ferry.

5 White’s Ferry
White’s Ferry (%301-
349-5200; 24801 Whites
Ferry Rd, Dickerson, MD; car/
bicycle/pedestrian $5/2/1;
h5am-11pm) is the last

functioning river service
between Maryland and
Virginia. The ferry runs
continuously from 5am
to 11pm, and during rush
hour it’s pretty packed.
The process is easy: line
your car up at the ferry
office and wait to board
the good ship Jubal A
Early. Once you drive on
or board the boat, the
surliest ferry operator
ever will snatch your fare

(cash only) and then you
quickly chug across the
Potomac to Leesburg, VA.
The Drive » If you want a
pretty detour, head northwest
of White’s Ferry to the small
town of Boyd (p201), nestled in
green foothills. Otherwise, take
the ferry to Leesburg, then take
VA-15 north for 8 miles. Then
turn left onto State Route 672/
Lovettsville and follow it for 6
miles. Turn right onto VA-287
N/N Berlin Pike and follow it for
2.5 miles to Brunswick.
