1 Accokeek
About 23 miles south of
Washington DC via the
Indian Head Hwy (MD-
210), Accokeek is the first
community that feels
more Southern Maryland
than DC suburb.
This quilt of farms,
fields and forests
was (and to a degree,
remains) a popular
retreat for scientists
and intellectuals who
wanted to live in a rural
community within DC’s
orbit. The aesthetic
they were attracted
to is exemplified by
Piscataway Park (%301-
763-4600; http://www.nps.gov/
pisc; 3400 Bryan Point Rd;
hsunrise to sunset), a small
satellite of the National

Park System (NPS)
that consists of nature
trails, boardwalks over
freshwater wetlands,
views of the Potomac
River and National
Colonial Farm (h10am-
4pm, Tue-Sun, mid-Mar–mid-
Dec, 10am-4pm weekends-only
other months), a living
history museum that
recreates a middle-class
Maryland family farm
circa the Revolutionary
War period.

The Drive » Get back on
MD-210 and head south for 8
miles to reach the entrance to
Indian Head.

2 Indian Head
Peninsula
There’s not a lot to see in
little Indian Head, but

it’s a logical jumping off
point for exploring the
Indian Head Peninsula,
which is hugged by the
Potomac River.
Smallwood State Park
(%301-743-7613; http://www.dnr.
state.md.us/publiclands/

Sweden Point Road, Marbury;
$5; h5am-sunset Apr-Oct,
7am-sunset Nov-Mar) sits
