5 Golden Fleece Pub $
(%302-674-1776; 132 W Loockerman St; mains
under $10; h4pm-midnight, til late on weekends,
from noon Sun) The best bar in Dover also
serves up pizza, cheesesteaks and burgers. It
has the atmosphere of an old English pub, and
an outdoor patio for summer nights.
4 State Street Inn B&B $$
(%302-734-2294; http://www.statestreetinn.com; 228
N State St; r $125-135) Although it’s a bit over
the top in its cuteness and flowery-patterned
wallpapers and sheets, the State Street remains
a solid accommodation choice, with friendly,
knowledgeable service and an unbeatable
central location.

5 Dog House American $
(%302-328-5380; 1200 Dupont Hwy; mains
under $10; h10:30am-midnight) Don’t be fooled
by the name; while this unassuming counter top
does hot dogs and does them exceedingly well
(the chili dogs are a treat), they also whip out
mean subs and cheesesteaks that could pass
muster in Philly.
5 Jessop’s Tavern American $$
(%302-322-6111; 114 Delaware St; mains $12-24;
h11:30am-10pm, to midnight Fri & Sat) There
are big, mouthwatering colonial dishes like roast
duck and honey-drop biscuits at this colonial-
style tavern. Half the fun is watching the bored
teenage staff chafe in their colonial-era garb.
The bar has a good beer selection.
4 Terry House B&B B&B^ $
(%302-322-2505; http://www.terryhouse.com; 130
Delaware St; r $90-110; pW) The owner of the
five-room Terry House B&B will play the piano
for you while you enjoy a full breakfast. That’s a
treat for sure, but we’re more impressed by the
historical grounds and supremely cozy rooms;
there’s nothing like stepping from a historical
village into historical accommodation.
Wilmington 8
5 Leo & Jimmy’s Deli Deli^ $
(%302-656-7151; 728 Market St; mains
$4-10; h5:30am-4pm Mon-Fri) This deli is a
Wilmington standby, well loved for its excellent
sandwiches and service – friendly with just the
right touch of endearing surliness.
4 Hotel du Pont Hotel^ $$$
(%302-594-3100; http://www.hoteldupont.com;
cnr Market & 11th Sts; r $230-480; paW)
The premier hotel in the state, the du Pont
is luxurious and classy enough to satisfy
its namesake (ie one of America’s most
successful industrialist families). The spot
exudes an art-deco majesty that Jay Gatsby
would have been proud of, but the goodness
goes beyond the impressive lobby to well-
appointed rooms and proximity to a handsome
shopping arcade.
