Washington Monument

For the best views of Baltimore, climb

the 228 steps of this 178ft-tall Doric

column, better known as Baltimore’s

Washington Monument (699 Washington

Pl; suggested donation $5; h10am-5pm

Wed-Sun). The ground floor contains a

museum about Washington’s life. The

surrounding circle of cobblestones and

green lawns is known as Mt Vernon

Place, and is one of the most attractive

photo opportunities in Baltimore.

The Walk » Walters Art Museum is only 500ft

away. Walk downhill on Charles St, then turn right

on Centre St to reach the entrance.

Walters Art Museum

Do not pass up the Walters (%410-

St; h10am-5pm Wed-Sun, to 9pm Thu), a

fantastic art museum whose collection

spans over 55 centuries, from ancient

to contemporary, with excellent

displays of Asian treasures, rare and

ornate manuscripts and books, and

a comprehensive French paintings

collection. It is, essentially, a repository

of every kind of cool stuff, and we could

lose a week wandering its galleries. And

by the way – it’s free.

The Walk » Continue west on Centre St and

turn left on Cathedral St. The Pratt Library is on

your right after 500ft.

Enoch Pratt Free Library

The Enoch Pratt Free Library (400

Cathedral St; h10am-8pm Mon-Wed, to 5pm

Thu-Sat, 1-5pm Sun; W) was established in

1882 when philanthropist Enoch Pratt

gave the city a $1 million endowment

towards the remarkably progressive

idea of establishing a library that

‘shall be for all, rich and poor without

distinction of race or color.’ The grand

central reading room is marvelous, all

natural light and baroque-esque design

flourishes.

The Walk » The Basilica of the Assumption is

just around the corner. Walk down Cathedral St,

then turn left on Mulberry to get there.
