Eating & Sleeping
Harpers Ferry 1
5 Secret Six Tavern Gastropub^ $
(%304-535-1159; 186 High St; mains $7-18;
h11am-9pm) A fine place to grab a bite,
this convivial pub just down the hill from the
Jackson Rose hotel (p201) has friendly (if
sometimes scattered) service, delicious (if
sometimes greasy) food, and a great selection
of beer.
Shepherdstown 2
5 Blue Moon Cafe Deli^ $
(%304-876-1920; 200 E High St; mains
$7-10; h11am-9pm Mon-Sat, noon-8pm
Sun) There’s a lot to love about this deli,
with its collegiate and hippie staff, huge
outdoor patio, indoor publike dining area
and excellent menu of healthy and not-so-
healthy salads and sandwiches. The sandwich
menu is intimidatingly large, but everything
is delicious. The place is kind of scruffy, but
therein lays the Blue Moon’s counter-culture
charm.
4 Bavarian Inn Hotel^ $$
(%304-876-2551; http://www.bavarianinnwv.com;
164 Shepherd Grade Rd; r from $95-180;
pWs) This place doesn’t just have a cute
Germanic name; the Bavarian takes the Euro-
mountaineering theme and runs with it all the
way up the Alps. The exterior looks like a chalet,
and the rooms have an attractively severe,
clean, comfortable and efficient air that’s,
forgive us the stereotype, kind of German. A
nice break from the trails.
Berkeley Springs 3
5 Tari’s Fusion^ $$
(%304-258-1196; 33 N Washington St; lunch
$8-12, dinner $19-27; h11am-9pm; v) Tari’s is
a very Berkeley Springs sort of spot, with fresh
local food and good vegetarian options served in
a laid-back atmosphere with all the right hints of
good karma abounding. The Thai Mahi tacos are a
delicious way to satisfy one’s lunch cravings.
4 Highlawn Inn B&B^ $$
(%304-258-5700; http://www.highlawninn.com; r $98-
180, cottage $205-225; W) This quaint B&B has
an excellent diversity of rooms, from cozy nooks
to full-on guest cottages that are good value for
groups. The decor is decidedly of the antique-chic
school of design, and the innkeepers are a friendly
crew.
Fayetteville 7
5 Cathedral Café & Bookstore Cafe $
(%304-574-0202; 134 S Court St; mains $5-8;
h7:30am-4pm; iWv) Start the day right
with breakfast and coffee under stained-glass
windows. Local staff all seem to either work in or
know someone who works in the local adventure
tourism industry, so it’s a good spot to figure
out what’s going on in the New River Gorge area.
4 River Rock Retreat Hostel Hostel $
(%304-574-0394; http://www.riverrock
retreatandhostel.com; Lansing-Edmond Rd; dm
$23; pa) Located less than 1 mile north of
the New River Gorge Bridge, this is a well-run
hostel with basic, clean rooms and plenty of
common space. Owner Joy Marr is a wealth of
local information. The dorms are warm and dry,
and feel like heaven after camping.
