Floyd 3

5 Oddfella’s Fusion^ $
(%540-745-3463; 110 N Locust St; lunch mains
$7-14, dinner $8-21; h11am-2:30pm Wed-Sat,
5-9pm Thu-Sun, 10am-3pm Sun; pv) This
woodsy, organic eatery touts its menu as
‘conscious comfort food with an Appalachian
Latino twist.’ Que? Think jumbo chimichangas,
goats cheese tostadas and grilled veggie
platters, including some vegan options. Plus
there’s a great beer and wine menu.

5 Pine Tavern American^ $
(%540-745-4482; 611 Floyd Hwy; mains $7-13;
h4:30-9pm Thu-Sat, 11am-8pm Sun; pc)
One taste of the buttermilk biscuits, fried
chicken and country ham at this all-you-can-eat
restaurant and your mouth won’t stop salivating.
They pile on dumplings, pinto beans, green
beans and mashed potatoes, because why not?

4 Hotel Floyd Hotel^ $$
(%540-745-6080; http://www.hotelfloyd.com; 120
Wilson St; r $85-146; paW#) Built in 2007
with ecofriendly materials and furnishings,
Hotel Floyd is one of the ‘greenest’ hotels in
Virginia and a model of sustainability. Each of
the 14 rooms were decorated by local artisans
and exude a rustic, warm charm.

4 Oak Haven Lodge Hotel^ $
(%540-745-5716; http://www.oakhavenlodge.com;
323 Webb’s Mill Rd; r $75-90; pc) This
comfortable lodge is just a few minutes outside
downtown Floyd and is good value for money.
It’s located in a fairly new building and features
big decks and comfortable beds. Some rooms
have their own Jacuzzi.

Rocky Knob 4

4 Rocky Knob Cabins Cabins^ $
(%540-593-3503; http://www.rockyknobcabins.com;
266 Mabry Mill Rd; cabin with shared bath $75;

hMay-Oct; p#) These low-fi cabins are set
in a secluded stretch of forest. Bring food, as
eating options are limited along this stretch of
the parkway.

Galax 8

5 Galax Smokehouse Barbecue $
(%276-236-1000; 101 N Main St; mains $7-18;
h11am-9pm Mon-Sat, to 3pm Sun) This popular
restaurant has loads of fans, chipper staff and
stupidly good barbecue (and chili. Man, that
chili).

4 Fiddlers Roost Cabins $$
(%276-236-1212; http://fiddlersroostcabins.
com; 485 Fishers Peak Rd; cabins $120-160;
pc) We love these eight cabins, which
resemble Lincoln Logs playsets. The interiors
are decorated in ‘quilt’ chic; they may not win a
place in Wallpaper magazine, but they’re cozy
and have gas fireplaces, kitchens, TVs and DVD
players.

Abingdon 9

5 Rain American $$$
(%276-739-2331; 283 E Main St; mains
$18-27; h11am-2pm & 5-9pm Tue-Sat; p)
Excellent New American cuisine inspired by the
Appalachians. The mains, like seared salmon
and sweet mustard pork chops, are executed
wonderfully, with great consistency – this is the
best splurge around.

4 Martha Washington Inn Hotel $$
(%276-628-3161; http://www.marthawashingtoninn.
com; 150 W Main St; r from $173; paiWs)
This super glamorous hotel sits in a huge 1832
mansion estate. Breakfast is great. Bonus
points if you dare to wear your cuddly robe
downstairs.
