the lake shore on this 40-mile

stretch, passing dozens of old-

school motels before coming

to the prosperous village of

Bolton Landing, a good place

to stop for a bite to eat. Along

the way, peek through the trees

to glimpse forested islets and

stately waterfront homes once

known as ‘Millionaires Row’. Rte

9N veers inland and becomes

more commercial approaching

Ticonderoga.

2 Ticonderoga

The small town of

Ticonderoga is known

essentially for two

things: the No 2 pencil

factory that’s long since

shut down, and its

iconic fort. Since it was

taken from the British

in 1775 by the ‘Green

Mountain Boys’ (a group

of independence-loving

hotheads from Vermont

led by Ethan Allen

and Benedict Arnold,

a colonel at the time

and pre-betrayal), Fort

May 17-Oct 20) has been

synonymous with the

American Revolution.

Nowadays its buckling

stone walls and rickety

wooden outposts,

affording stellar views of

the surrounding lakes,

can barely sustain their

own weight, let alone

that of a 300lb cannon.

But every summer the

carefully preserved fort

opens its museum and

grounds for tours and

reenactments.

The Drive » It’s a good idea

to fuel up on gas before leaving

Ticonderoga for this 18-mile

drive. Each turn of Rte 22 brings

a new view of Lake Champlain’s

sculpted shores, pushed up

against the foothills of the Green

Mountains. On the other side,

it’s all wavy-gold meadows and

carefully sculpted fields.

3 Crown Point State
