Out of three schools we surveyed we found that in their SATS, children who had
used their own written methods to solve the problems were successful in achieving
the correct answers for those questions. Price also reported that, when using a devel-
opmental approach to mathematics and allowing children to record in their own
way, their SATS scores increased (Price, 1994). We therefore believe that supporting
children’s own methods and chosen ways of representing their mathematical think-
ing will help children’s performance in national tests.
