The local hurdlers were the highlight of the
Division 2 Lower Peninsula Track and Field
Finals in Zeeland Saturday.
Hastings junior Allison Teed ran to a fifth-
place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a
time of 16.04 seconds and Thornapple Kellogg
junior Trysta Hilton set a new personal record
in the 300-mere low hurdles with her time of
47.82 seconds which put her in in fifth place
in that race.
The Saxons, Trojans and Lakewood Vikings
had athletes competing all over the Zeeland
track and field campus throughout the day.
All four girls ahead of Teed in the 100-
meter hurdles Saturday were seniors, a pack
paced by Allegan’s Hannah Antkoviak who
won the race in 14.94.
Teed has broken that 16-second barrier
once as a hurdler for the Saxon varsity, at the
pre-regional meet hosted by the Saxons last
month.
Antkoviak won both hurdles races in
Zeeland, taking the 300 hurdles in 44.69.
Hilton was just behind conference rival
Mallory Huttenga, a freshman from South
Christian, in the 300 hurdles. Huttenga was
fourth in 47.65.
Hastings sophomore Robbie Slaughter
cleared 11-10 in the pole vault, but three tries
at 12-4 were unsuccessful. TK senior Paige
Zellmer got over the bar at 9-3 in the girls’
pole vault, but got stuck at 9-9. The last of the
eight state medalists in the boys’ pole vault
cleared 12-10 while the final medalists in the
girls’ event cleared 9-9.
Also in the field, TK had sophomore Alana
Compton competing in the girls’ discus and
Lakewood had senior Garrett Stank close his
varsity career in the long jump with a best
leap of the day coming in at 19-7. Compton’s
best throw Saturday was 99-10.
Teed competed in two state events, the hur-
dles and the 4x200-meter relay along with
sophomore teammate Madison Nino and
Saxon freshmen Addey Nickels and Isabelle
Roosien. That Saxon foursome was 11th in
that race with a time of 1 minute 50.40 sec-
onds, and Nino also competed in the 400-
meter dash Saturday finishing 17th in 1:04.05.
TK senior Wyatt Helzer ran in the 200-
meter dash after joining teammates Jaxon
Sias, Cameron Gavette and Austin Van Elst in
a tenth-place 4x200-meter relay performance.
Helzer was 18th in the 200 with a time of
23.78. The Trojan relay team finished its race
in 1:33.25, about seven tenths of a second
behind the last of the eight state medalist relay
teams in the race.
Petoskey took the Division 2 girls’ team
state championship Saturday with 48 points,
ahead of Parma Western 29, Bridgeport 26,
Frankenmuth 25, Belding 24.5, Allegan 23,
Freeland 23, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook 22,
Dearborn Divine Child 22 and Grand Rapids
Christian 22 in the top ten.
Petoskey was led to the title by senior dis-
tance runner Emma Squires who won the
1600-meter run in 4:55.05, the 800-meter run
in 2:14.00 and placed second in the 3200-
meter run with a time of 11:03.80. Grand
Rapids Christian junior Madelyn Frens won
the 3200 in 11:01.53 after finishing second to
Squires in the 1600.
Squires also teamed with juniors Noel
Vanderwall and Caroline Farley, and fellow
senior Sarah Liederbach, to win the 4x800-me-
ter relay in 9:27.33.
Bridgeport junior Chaniya Madison won
the 100-meter dash in 12.36 seconds and the
200 in 25.96.
Belding freshman Brook Simpson set a
new Michigan High School Athletic
Association Division 2 Finals record in win-
ning the high jump at 5-10.
The boys’ team championship went to theFrankenmuth team that finished with 45.
points, ahead of Flint Powers Catholic 42,
Fruitport 40, Allendale 28, Fremont 26,
Mason 25, Edwardsburg 23, Monroe Jefferson
23, Chelsea 22 and Holland Christian 21 in
the top ten.
Frankenmuth was powered by its relay
teams. Ian Stephens, Sam Barger, Andrew
Braman and Daniel Barger won the 4x100-me-
ter relay in 43.28 seconds and placed second
to Fruitport in the 4x200-meter relay. The
Frankenmuth team of Stephens, Seth Malmo,
Sam Barger and Ryan Brenner was the run-
