Genius Foods

Forget “Everything in Moderation” and

Embrace Consistency

Many people told to “moderate” their carbohydrate
intake negotiate themselves down to half a muffin at
breakfast and a smaller portion of spaghetti at dinner. While
this is less than the Standard American Diet may include, it
is still two servings of mainlined glucose (and subsequent
insulin secretion) that your body likely didn’t need in the
first place.
Still, the guidance to eat “everything in moderation” is
pervasive. A recent University of Texas study looking to
evaluate this unfortunate prescription found that higher
dietary diversity, as defined by less similarity among the
foods people eat, was linked to lower diet quality and worse

metabolic health.^27 Translated to English: participants that
abided by the “eat everything in moderation” rule were
eating fewer healthy foods, such as vegetables, and more
unhealthy foods, such as grain-fed meats, desserts, and
soda. “These results suggest that in modern diets, eating
‘everything in moderation’ is actually worse than eating a
smaller number of healthy foods,” commented Dariush
Mozaffarian, the study’s senior author.
“Americans with the healthiest diets actually eat a
relatively small range of healthy foods,” observed Dr.
Mozaffarian. What does this mean for you? Buy the Genius
