phytonutrient content of cocoa, taking what would
otherwise be beneficial and turning it into empty calories.
The amount of sugar contained in store-bought chocolate
varies widely—you want something with minimal sugar and
a high percentage of cacao, so look for chocolate with a
cacao content above 80%. Anything below this and
chocolate tends to veer into hyper-palatable territory. (Milk
chocolate and white chocolate are essentially just candy—
pure sugar.) Once you find a good 85% bar, you’ll notice
that just a piece here and there allows you to enjoy
chocolate without creating an insatiable feedback loop that
perpetuates until the whole bar is gone.
Better yet—make your own chocolate at home to avoid
any sugar at all and eat to your heart’s content! It’s
surprisingly easy—I provide a great recipe on page.
How to use: Consume one 85% dark chocolate bar per
week. Opt for organic or fair trade certified, which is almost
always ethically sourced.
