took advanced placement
classes in calculus, computer
science and American and
world history, which boosted
his GPA.
“Brayden is the epitome of
a student with honor and

integrity,” CHS English
teacher Sarah Wrubel said.
“From the way he speaks to
staff to the way he carries
himself in the hallways, it is
evident that he has a deep
desire to serve others. I loved

every minute of having him
in class.”
“Brayden is consistent,
positive and respectful,”
CHS AP computer science
teacher Jim Klomparens
added. “[His] work is always
turned in on time, asking for
feedback whether wrong or
right. He also is a great team-
mate in the classroom with
his fellow students. Brayden
has a great sense of humor
and enjoys the work required
to succeed.”

Folkersma’s academic
achievements earned him
recognition on the Michigan
High School Football
Coaches Association’s All-
Academic Team.
Even with the challenges
presented by the COVID-
pandemic, Folkersma contin-
ued to strive for success, and
to help others along the way.
“It’s always been my goal
to serve, so I just always
pushed through and found a
way to get through every-
thing,” he said.
With the CHS National
Honor Society, Folkersma
served as a lead tutor for stu-
dents who needed a little
help with their classwork.
“I usually focused on math
and science, because that’s
what I’m best at,” he said.
Folkersma also developed
a strong work ethic through
working for the past 2-1/
years at Martin’s Sugar Bush
and Produce in Caledonia
Township.
“Last summer, I was prob-
ably working about 60
[hours],” he said. “With

COVID and not being in
school, I was working like
crazy. I’ve been probably
working 30-40 [hours] right
now.”
Folkersma credits his par-
ents, Brian and Lisa
Folkersma, for instilling in
him the values that he has
developed and will take to
Annapolis with him.
“They always pushed me
to be the best person I can
be,” he said.
Folkersma has a younger
brother, Ethan, who will be a
junior at CHS this fall.
Ethan’s professional inter-
ests lie in architecture,
Folkersma said.
Founded in 1845, the U.S.
Naval Academy is a four-
year service academy that
prepares midshipmen to be
professional officers in the
naval service. More than
4,400 men and women from
every state in the U.S. make
up the student body, known
as the Brigade of
Midshipmen. The Naval
Academy has been recog-
nized as a top five under-

graduate engineering school
and a top 20 best liberal arts
college by U.S. News and
World Report.
Midshipmen can earn a
degree in one of 25 different
subject majors and, after
graduation, go on to serve at
least five years as commis-
sioned officers in either the
U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine
Corps.
Folkersma plans to enter
the Marines as a commis-
sioned officer upon his
expected graduation from the
Naval Academy in the spring
of 2025.
“I almost want to retire out
of the Marines and then find
another career after that,
whether it be farming or pri-
vate security or even [run for
the] House of
Representatives,” he said.
