Phyllosticta

Phyllosticta fungus is an important plant pathogen, infec-

ting leaves, fruits and branches. It is responsible for nu-

merous diseases that cause significant losses in planta-

tions of grape and banana. It may have endophytic and

saprophytic species. In the laboratory, the fungus grows

to form a hard, irregular, curly, greyish-black surface whe-

re the spores are produced inside pycnidia. The spores

are hyaline and have a very discrete appendix on one side

when viewed under a microscope. Phyllosticta species

have been reported to be efficient in the degradation of

toxic compounds in the environment and in the biological

control of pests.

O fungo Phyllosticta é um importante patógeno de plan-

tas, infectando as folhas, frutos e ramos. É responsável

por inúmeras doenças que ocasionam perdas significa-

tivas na cultura de citros, uva e banana. Também são

encontradas espécies endofíticas e saprofíticas. Em la-

boratório o fungo cresce formando uma superfície dura,

irregular, crespa, acinzentada a negra onde são produ-

zidos os esporos dentro de picnídios. Os esporos são

hialinos e apresentam um apêndice bem discreto em um

dos lados, quando observados ao microscópio. Há rela-

tos de espécies de Phyllosticta serem eficientes na de-

gradação de compostos tóxicos do ambiente e no con-

trole biológico de pragas.
