From that day on, I changed my home practice from dynamic to
restorative, and I made it a rule to get bodywork done—massage,
acupuncture, energy work—once a week. We were all over the place and
life was moving so fast around me; I had to adopt a practice that not only
soothed my body but also my soul. I stopped thinking that my time on the
mat had to look a certain way (aka flowy, advanced, and inverted) and
focused on poses that would stretch my tight muscles in a safe way and
would heal my back.
My homework will always be to heal my back; it’s not a problem that
suddenly will be fixed and go away. I need to keep my life stress free and
my body healthy to feel good. at goes for all of us! is is why yoga is
called a practice; we’re never done.
Not a day goes by that I don’t put my legs up against the wall (one of
the most healing things you can do for a sensitive lower back). We all
need to figure out what our yoga homework is; for some it’s back pain, for
others it’s tight hamstrings, healing old injuries, a tense neck—what have
you. Let your yoga heal you by adapting your practice to what you need
during this moment of your life. I’m certain I will find my way back to a
dynamic practice again (right now I’m someplace in between) because our
yoga practice ebbs and flows like the tide. Surrendering to what is and
moving with life instead of against it is the key.
