ere are still things that scare me, of course, but I’ve made it a rule:
Whenever I feel that flutter of fear at the pit of my stomach, I have to do
it. If the thought of it makes me nervous, I have to say yes. is is how I
continue to grow as a teacher, as a student, and as a human being. e
idea of writing a book used to feel daunting, but just look at me now. I get
approached regularly about lectures, and up until very recently this was
something that made my palms sweat just from thinking about it. Public
speaking? Me? Never! e thing about life is, you get what you need. Not
what you want. And everything happens at the right time. As I finished
writing this chapter, I got a call from an inspirational event management
company asking me to lecture in front of an audience of seven hundred
people about the book and my life as a traveling yoga instructor. I
immediately said no—no way. I teach yoga, I don’t lecture, I said. It’s just
not for me. I hung up the phone feeling a bit queasy from the mere idea,
and turned back to my computer. e first thing my eye caught was the
title of this very chapter: Love over fear. Love. Over. Fear. I’d just written
an entire chapter about moving past your fears, and here I was, turning
down opportunities because I was scared? I knew what I had to do. I called
the company back and accepted. I said yes. I chose love.
