wall-associatedproteinsareproteinA,theclumpingfactor,andthefibronec-
tin-bindingproteinofStaphylococcusaureusortheMproteinofStreptococcus
pyogenes.Cellwallanchorregionsintheseproteinsextendingfarbeyondthe
mureinareboundcovalentlytoitspeptidecomponents.Cellwall-associated
proteinsfrequentlyfunctionaspathogenicitydeterminants(specificadher-
ence;phagocyteprotection).
ThecellwallofGram-negativebacteria.Here,themureinisonlyabout 2 nm
thickandcontributesupto 10 %ofthedrycellwallmass(Fig.3. 11 ).Theouter
membraneisthesalientstructuralelement.Itcontainsnumerousproteins
(50%bymass)aswellasthemedicallycriticallipopolysaccharide.
