possessaproteinshellsurroundingthephagegenome,whichwithfewex-
ceptionsiscomposedofDNA.Abacteriophageattachestospecificreceptors
onitshostbacteriaandinjectsitsgenomethroughthecellwall.Thisforces
thehostcellstosynthesizemorebacteriophages.Thehostcelllysesattheend
ofthisreproductivephase.So-calledtemperatebacteriophageslysogenize
thehostcells,wherebytheirgenomesareintegratedintothehostcellchro-
mosomesastheso-calledprophage.Thephagegenesareinactiveinthis
stage,althoughtheprophageisduplicatedsynchronouslywithhostcellpro-
liferation.Thetransitionfromprophagestatustothelyticcycleistermed
spontaneousorartificialinduction.Somegenomesoftemperatephages
maycarrygeneswhichhavethecapacitytochangethephenotypeofthe
hostcell.Integrationofsuchaprophageintothechromosomeisknown
aslysogenicconversion. &
