Severaldifferentobjectivescanbepursuedwithcombinationtherapy:
&Broadeningofthespectrumofaction.Inmixedinfectionswithpatho-
gensofvaryingresistance;incalculatedtherapyofinfectionswithunknown,
ornotyetknown,pathogenicfloraandresistancecharacteristics.
&Delayofresistancedevelopment.Intherapyoftuberculosis;whenusing
anti-infectiveagentsagainstwhichbacteriaquicklydevelopresistance.
&Potentiationofefficacy.Insevereinfectionsrequiringbactericidalactiv-
ityatthesiteofinfection.Best-knownexample:penicillinplusgentamicin
intreatmentofendocarditiscausedbyenterococciorstreptococci.

fects:
&Nodifference.Thecombinationisnomoreefficaciousthanthemore
activeofthetwocomponentsalone.
&Addition.Summationoftheeffects.
&Synergism.Potentiationoftheeffects.
&Antagonism.Thecombinationislessefficaciousthanoneofthetwo
componentsalone.
