Taxonomicclassificationisbasedontheconceptofthespecies.Especially
inanepidemiologicalsetting,weoftenneedtosubclassifyaspeciesinvarsor
(syn.)types,inwhichculturesofaspeciesthatsharecertaincharacteristics
aregroupedtogether.Examples:biovar,phagovar,pathovar,morphovar,ser-
ovar(alsobiotype,phagotype,etc.).Useofthetermstrainvariessomewhat:
inclinicalbacteriologyitoftendesignatesthefirstcultureofaspeciesisolated
fromaninfectedpatient.Inanepidemiologicalcontext,isolatesofthesame
speciesobtainedfromdifferentpatientsareconsideredtobelongtothesame
epidemicstrain.
Thereisnoofficial,internationallyrecognizedclassificationofbacteria.
Thehighertaxathereforeoftenreflectpracticalconsiderations.
