Culture.Chlamydiaeexploitenergymetabolismprocessesintheirhostcells
thattheythemselvesarelacking(ATPsynthesis).Forthisreason,theycan
onlybegrowninspecialcellcultures,intheyolksacsofembryonated
heneggs,orinexperimentalanimals.
Chlamydiapsittaci(Ornithosis,Psittacosis)
Pathogenesisandclinicalpicture.ThenaturalhostsofC.psittaciarebirds.
Thisspeciescausesinfectionsoftherespiratoryorgans,theintestinaltract,
thegenitaltract,andtheconjunctivaofparrotsandotherbirds.Humansare
infectedbyinhalationofdust(frombirdexcrements)containingthepatho-
gens,morerarelybyinhalationofinfectiousaerosols.
Afteranincubationperiodofonetothreeweeks,ornithosispresentswith
fever,headache,andapneumoniathatoftentakesanatypicalclinicalcourse.
Theinfectionmay,however,alsoshownomorethanthesymptomsofa
commoncold,orevenremainclinicallysilent.Infectedpersonsarenotusual-
lysourcesofinfection.
Diagnosis.Thepathogencanbegrownfromsputuminspecialcellcultures.
Directdetectioninthecultureisdifficultandonlypossibleinspecially
equippedlaboratories.Thecomplementbindingreactioncanbeusedto
identifyantibodiestoagenericantigencommontoallchlamydiae,sothat
