&Invasion.Bacteriamayinvadeahostpassivelythroughmicrotraumataor
macrotraumataintheskinormucosa.Ontheotherhand,bacteriathatinvade
throughintactmucosafirstadheretothisanatomicalbarrier,thenactively
breachit.Differentbacterialspeciesdeployavarietyofmechanismstoreach
thisend:
— Productionoftissue-damagingexoenzymesthatdestroyanatomicalbar-
riers.
— Parasite-directedendocytosis,initiatedbyinvasinsonthesurfaceofthe
bacterialcells,causesthecytoskeletonoftheepithelialcelltoformpseu-
dopodsthatbringaboutendocytosis.
— PhagocytosisofenteropathogenicbacteriabyMcellsintheintestinalmu-
cosa(cellsthatcaningestsubstancesfromtheintestinallumenbywayof
phagocytosis).
