Poxviruses


&Thevariolavirus,whichbelongstothegenusOrthopoxvirusandisthe
causativeagentinsmallpox,wasdeclarederadicatedin 1980 afteraWHO
vaccinationcampaign.Thevacciniavirus,usedattheendofthe 18 thcentury
byE.JennerinEnglandasavaccinevirustoprotectagainstsmallpox,isnow
usedasavectorinmolecularbiologyandasahybridviruswithdeterminants
fromothervirusesinexperimentalvaccines.Amongtheotherorthopox-
virusesfoundinanimals,themonkeypoxvirusesarethemainhumanpatho-
gens.Theanimalpathogensparapoxviruses(milker’snodules,orf)areocca-
sionallytransmittedtohumans,inwhomtheycauseharmlessexanthems.
Themolloscumcontagiosumvirusaffectsonlyhumansandcausesbenign
tumors.
