Epidemiology.Reservoirhostsoftheparasitearehumans.Theexcretedeggs
remainviableforyearsinamoistenvironment(soil),butaresensitiveto
desiccation.InfectiveAscariseggscanbeingestedbyhumanswithcontami-
natedfoods,soil(geophagiainchildren!)and,lessfrequently,indrinking
water.Inendemicareas,theprevalenceandintensityofA.lumbricoidesin-
fectionsarehighestinchildren.
Pathogenesisandclinicalmanifestations.Mildinfectionsfrequentlyremain
inapparent.Inmoresevereinfections,larvalmigrationinthelungsprovoke
hemorrhagesandinflammatoryinfiltrations,whichpresentasdiffusemot-
