Myiasis.Larvae(maggots)ofvariousflyspeciescanpenetrateandcolonize
theskin,skinlesions,andbodyorifices,therebycausingthetypeoftissue
damageknownasmyiasis.Therearevariousformsofmyiasis,themost
importantofwhicharesummarizedinTable 11. 4 .Casesofimportedmyiasis
andautochthonouswoundmyiasishaveincreasedincentralEuropeinrecent
years.Diagnosis:inspectionandidentificationofthelarvae.Therapy:me-
chanicalremovaloftheparasites,controlofsecondaryinfections,ifrequired
oraltherapywithivermectin(extralabeldruguse).
Themaggotsofcertainflyspecies(Luciliaspp.)raisedundersterilecon-
ditionsaresometimesusedfortreatingpatientswithnecrotizingornon-
healingdermallesions.Inmanycases,themaggotsareabletocleansuch
woundsinshortorder.
