existingleadsandlinesofinquiry.Theycan’tlearnmuch
moreinPhandalin,sotheyneedtosetoutintotheforests
andhillssurroundingthetowntouncoverthelargerplots
theyarecaughtupin.Thecharactersarenotrequiredto
visitallthelocationsinthissection.
DependingonwhichNPCsthecharactersmetand
whichquestsorcluestheypickedup,someorallthe
followinginformationmightbeknowntothem:



  • SisterGaraelewantsthecharacterstoseekouttheban-
    sheeAgathaintheruinedtownofConyberyandaskher

  • QellineAlderleafhassuggestedthatthecharactersgo
    totheruinedtownofThundertreeandconsultwiththe

  • TownmasterHarbinWesterwantsthecharactersto
    seekoutanoreencampmentnearWyvernTorand
    chasetheoresawayfromthearea.

  • SildarHallwinterwantsthecharacterstofindCragmaw
    Castle,searchforGundrenRockseeker,rescuethe
    dwarf,andretrievehismap.
    Eachofthesepossiblequestshasitsownsectionin
    thispartoftheadventure.Thecharacterscanremain
    inPhandalinlongenoughtorestupandpurchase
    supplies.Whenthey’redone,havethempickastorylineto
    investigate,thensetoutfortheappropriatedestination.


TriboarTrail

PhandalinliesinapartoftheNorthknownas“the
TriboarTrail,”“theTriboarCutoff,”or“theConyGap.”
Thisstretchoffoothillsandrolling,sparselywooded
plainsextendsbetweentheSwordMountainstothesouth
andNeverwinterWoodtothenorth.Theareagainsits
namefromanoldtrailthatrunsfromthedistanttownof
Triboartotheeast,windingwestwardaboutonehundred
milesthroughtheabandonedvillageofConyberry,then
runningnorthofPhandalinonitswaytotheHighRoad
alongthecoast.
Describetheparty’soverlandtravelsasvividlyasyou
like,butkeepthestorymoving.“Youwalkforseveral
milesandencounternothingofinterest”isfarless
evocativeandmemorablethan,“Alightraindampensthe
rollingplainsasyoutravelnorth.Aroundmidday,you
breakforlunchunderalonelytree.There,theroguefinds
asmallrockthatlookslikeagrinningface,butotherwise
youseenothingoutoftheordinary.”

UsingtheOverlandMap


Duringthispartoftheadventure,thecharacterswill
frequentlybemarchingoverlandfromonepointofinterest
toanother.Ascanbeseenontheregionalmaponpage5,
someoftheseareasareagoodfortytofiftymilesapart,
requiringseveraldaysofmarchingoverlandtotravelto
thenextadventuresite.
TravelTime.Assumethatthepartytravelstwenty-four
milesperdayoveraperiodoftenhours.Thecharacters
mustrestforeighthoursperday,withtheremaining
sixhoursconsistingofmakingandbreakingcamp,
preparingmeals,andalittlebitofforagingorhuntingas
theopportunitypermits.

WildernessEncounters


Asktheplayerstotellyoutheparty’smarchingorder,so
thatyouknowwhichcharactersareintheleadandwho’s
bringinguptherear.Whenthepartycamps,askwhich
charactersareonwatch.Thisinformationisimportantif
thepartyencounterssomethingdangerous.
TheTriboarTrailisnotsafe.Astheadventurerstravel
throughoutthisarea,theymightstumbleacrosshungry
beasts,greedybandits,orviciousmonsters.Checkfor
encountersonceduringthedayandonceatnightby
rollingad20.Onarollof17-20,anencountertakesplace.
Rolladl2andconsulttheWildernessEncounterstableto
determinewhatthepartymeets.
Whenanencounteroccurs,andtheadventurersgain
XPiftheydefeatthemonsters.Eachcreature’sstatblock
hastheXPvalueforonemonsterofthatsort.Multiplythat
valuebythenumberofcreaturesencountered,thendivide
thetotalequallyamongthecharacters.
