Runners together again at 2021 Kilt Klassic

Amy Pugh was one of a
handful of runners to go all
out and don a plaid kilt to
participate in the 2021 Kilt
Klassic 5K in Caledonia
Saturday, July 3.
Pugh was competing in
the Kilt Klassic for the third
time, wearing a kilt in the
annual race for the second
time.
“I am part of a club, ‘Run
Caledonia, Run’ and we did
the Fred Relay, which is kind
of like Ragnar, a 200-mile
relay and we were represent-
ing Caledonia so we were
doing the kilts. Once I
bought, and I heard they
wear kilts at this race, I
thought ‘hey,’ and I pull it
out and have some fun with
it.”
There have been limited
opportunities for runners to
compete whether at 5K or
200-mile distances over the
past year. The 2020 Kilt
Klassic was canceled amid
the Covid-19 pandemic and
it wasn’t until mid May that
event organizers decided
they would be able to quick-
ly put together a 2021 event.
The Kilt Klassic 5K/Fun Run
are annual fundraisers for the
Caledonia High School track
and field and cross country
programs.
Pugh was able to race in
the 15K at the Kent City
Ridge Run in late March of
2021 and the Groundhog
Day Marathon in Grand
Rapids in February 2021, so
she was ready for Saturday’s
race.
“It’s different to run in a
kilt. I have shorts under-
neath,” Pugh said with a
smile. “It brings a smile to
peoples faces. That is what I
like to do.”
Pugh set a new 5K person-
al record Saturday, on the
course that circled the track
inside Ralph E. Myers
Stadium in Caledonia before
heading out on the trails
around the Caledonia High
School and then back into
downtown Caledonia, west
on Main Street and then back
