EAST COAST COMEBACK

is month, we’recelebrating thegreatUS of A, especially the east
coast, which is firmly on leisuretravellers’ radars once more

2021 is an exciting year for Boston’s hotel
scene. In June the revamped Langham,
Boston hotel (langhamhotels.com) flung
open its doors after a multimillion-dollar
renovation. Built in 1922 as the Federal
Reserve Bank of Boston, it’s filled with
nods to its banking past, including the
original terrazzo floor (complete with the
Reserve’s seal) in the Grana restaurant.
Then there’s the Newbury Boston
(thenewburyboston.com), which opened
in May in the historic Back Bay area.
Highlights include a glass-enclosed
rooftop restaurant and a library with a
book collection curated by the Boston
Public Library.
For multi-destination adventures, let
the train take the strain and hop on one
of Amtrak’s most spectacular routes
(amtrak.com). President Biden recently
announced plans to invest $80bn in
Amtrak, which turns 50 this year. We
highly recommend Amtrak’s Adirondack
service, which connects New York with
Montreal in Canada.
For something slightly faster, head to
Florida, where Universal Orlando Resort’s
hi-tech VelociCoaster opened in June. It’s
got the steepest drop of any Universal

Orlando rollercoaster and a high-speed
launch that propels passengers to 7 0mph
in 2 .4 seconds. However, make sure you
venture beyond the parks. This summer
will see the opening of downtown
Orlando’s high-tech Steinmetz Hall theatre,
designed to achieve an N 1 sound rating –
the lowest level at which humans can
detect sound.
Finally, consider Washington DC, home
to the Smithsonian Institution, which
celebrates its 1 75th anniversary this year.
The anniversary event we’re most excited
about is Futures at the Arts and Industries
Building. Due to be unveiled in late 202 1,
the exhibition will be packed with robotics
and prototypes, including an artificial
intelligence-driven rover and a Loon
internet balloon. DC is also a brilliant
destination for cyclists – a 2 4-hour pass
for the Capital Bikeshare scheme costs
just £5.60. Fancy something tougher? DC
is the starting point for the Chesapeake
and Ohio Canal (nps.gov/choh), a
184-mile-long National Historical Park.
Allow around four or five days to cycle its
entire length, and plan ahead – the most
sought-after overnight stopovers are the
Canal Quarters lockhouses.
