Rep. Hall casts vote to curb ‘executive overreach’

Michigan House acts on Unlock Michigan initiative

Rep. Matt Hall, of Marshall,

on July 21 joined Michigan

House colleagues to formally

approve a petition repealing

the 1945 Emergency Powers

of the Governor Act.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

used the act to declare an

extended state of emergency

during the COVID-19 pan-

demic and issued wide-rang-

ing directives without the

approval of the Legislature,

noted Hall, who added the

directives impacted lives and

livelihoods throughout the

state, while negating the abil-

ity for people to be represent-

ed through their elected offi-

cials and have their voices

heard.

In October, the Michigan

Supreme Court ruled that

Whitmer violated her consti-

tutional authority by continu-

ing to issue orders without

the approval of the

Legislature. A citizens’ ini-

tiative sought to repeal the

law, and approval from the

Legislature will make it offi-

cial.

“As the governor issued

unilateral orders around the

Legislature, people felt like

they had lost their voice in

Lansing and had no represen-

tation,” Hall said when

addressing the initiative

before the House. “They felt

the system was not working

for them. Those concerned

and impacted by these unilat-

eral actions, including many

small business owners and

families, began circulating

this petition because they felt

they had no other way for

their voice to be heard. They

acted in an organic, construc-

tive fashion. Repealing this

emergency law tells these

many people that they will be

heard and helps re-establish

needed balance within our

state government going for-

ward. I’m proud to stand up

for them and be a resounding

voice for them today.”

With the Michigan Senate

already approving the mea-

sure last week, the initiative

now becomes law without

the need for the governor’s

signature – as prescribed by

the Michigan Constitution.

There is no ability for

Whitmer to veto the proposal

following passage in both

chambers.

to Calhoun County Public
Health Department
(CCPHD), with a total of 300
deaths attributed to the virus.
This information is updated
once daily, Monday through

COVID-19 Vaccine
Information
The state vaccine dash-
board shows that as of July
14, 2021, 104,445 doses had
been administered to Calhoun
County residents, from vari-
ous sources, not just the
Public Health Department.
In Calhoun County, total
shots administered by the
Public Health Department as
of July 12 are, 21,042 first
dose and 18,979 second dose
shots. Between July 4-12, the
Public Health Department
administered 29 vaccine
doses. The first dose totals
include all who are vaccinat-
ed by CCPHD with one dose
of any vaccine: Pfizer,
Moderna or Johnson &
Johnson.
Vaccine Clinic Schedule
Recently, a new vaccine
clinic location was added to
the Public Health
Department’s ongoing sched-
ule of vaccine clinics. The
CCPHD ended the vaccine
clinic at 820 Mann Rd in
Marshall and moved it to 225
E Watson St. in Albion. This

replaces the recurring every

third Wednesday from 3-6

p.m., and the change sup-

ports efforts by the Population

Health Alliance and Albion

Health Care Alliance as they

begin door-to-door canvass-

ing in Albion.

Win’ Sweepstakes that gives

vaccinated Michiganders a

chance to win $5 million in

cash, as well as a combined

total of $500,000 in college

scholarships. Residents ages

18 and older who have

received one dose of vaccine

are eligible to register for a

combined total of $5 million

in cash giveaways and can do

so at http://www.MIShotToWin.

com.

In addition, Michigan’s

vaccine sweepstakes will

offer the opportunity to win

one of nine Scholarship

Drawing prizes available to

vaccinated Michiganders

between ages 12-17 whose

parents enter on their behalf.

The sweepstakes ends on

Aug. 3, 2021. Eligibility cri-

teria and how to enter the

drawings is at the MI Shot to

Calhoun County Vaccine

Ambassadors

In Calhoun County,

Vaccine Ambassadors are

playing a critical role in the

effort to increase the number

of those who have received

protection against COVID-

19. These COVID-19 vac-
    cine ambassadors are in
    Battle Creek and Albion
    speaking with residents in
    Calhoun County about their
    vaccine questions and con-
    cerns. With the efforts of the
    ambassadors, the Public
    Health Department hopes
    this will increase our current
    rate of COVID-19 vaccina-
    tion in Calhoun County.
    Currently, the vaccine rate of
    individuals who have full
    vaccination in Calhoun is
    49.6%, but the goal is to
    reach 70% to truly feel confi-
    dent that we have the spread
    of the vaccine under control.

ally for a strategic planning

session that lasted two and a

half hours. Led by County

Chair Mac McCullough, and

facilitated by consultant Peter

Dams, the group discussed its

mission and vision, and

explored milestones for four

primary strategy areas--

access, affordability, literacy,

and adoption. This demon-

strates the breadth of access

the task force is interested in

pursuing: Not only should

internet be available and

affordable, but there should

be resources in place to assist

residents with accessing it

and improving digital literacy,

ideally 24-hours a day. This

goal-setting will influence the

efforts of the task force in the

upcoming years. General
