E-Sports program continues

to grow at Marshall Academy

Marshall Academy will
begin its third season for
E-Sports in the fall. The club,
Marshall Academy Gamers
(MAg), was formed in the
spring of 2020 with the
awarding of a grant from the
Marshall Community
Foundation.
With this grant the club
was able to purchase needed
equipment/consoles for prac-
tice and competition. The
club formed from the interest
of a few students during a
field trip to the state Capitol.
The Marshall Community

Foundation is a non-profit
organization dedicated to
improving quality of life in
Marshall, and throughout
Calhoun County. The
Foundation holds perma-
nently endowed funds from a
range of donors and serves as
a conduit for special projects
and the distribution of grants
in support of innovative pro-
grams like this one. For more
information about the foun-
dation visit http://www.marshallcf.
org.
“As a teacher, I saw an
interest in several students

who had little to no reason to
want to come to school, or
participate in any school
activity,” said Lesley Katz.
“I worked with several stu-
dents to form the club -
searching out leagues,
researching computers, and
learning about the E-Sports
world. Though our first two
years were hindered by
COVID restrictions, we were
able to compete in the spring
of 2021 through virtual play
from home.”
The club itself is driven by
student involvement and

activity.
“As a coach I provide
adult supervision and I work
with the Michigan High
School E-Sports Federation
(MiHSEF) for competition
season scheduling and
matches,” said Katz. “This
club is truly student driven
and given the current culture
and technology I foresee a
large growth in membership
of our own E-Sports team as
well as other schools who do
not already have E-Sports
teams developing their own.”
If any schools or teachers

in the area are interested in
forming an E-Sports team,
reach out to MiHSEF through

their website https://mihsef.
org/.
