The big story
AT THIS YEAR’S
WWDC IN
JUNE, APPLE
INTRODUCED THE
WORLD TO MACOS
MONTEREY, THE NEXT VERSION
OF THE MAC’S OPERATING
SYSTEM. With exciting new features
like AirPlay to Mac, Shortcuts and
Universal Control, together with
improvements to FaceTime, Safari and
Quick Notes, macOS Monterey looks
like a worthy upgrade for Mac users.
“macOS Monterey is packed with
features that help Mac users get more
done, connect with friends and family
in amazing new ways, and work across
Mac and iPad more seamlessly than
ever before,” said Craig Federighi,
Apple’s senior vice president of
Software Engineering.
Many of the new features are also
found in the new iOS 15 and iPadOS
15, like improvements to FaceTime
calls, a new Focus mode to help you
concentrate on work, and new sharing
options, but there are some new
features that can only be found in macOS
Monterey. Here, we’ll take a look at them,
starting with Universal Control.
If you’re anything like us, you don’t own
just one Apple device – you own several –
and with Universal Control, you’re going
to be able to use them together in new
and exciting ways. Simply set your iPad
down beside your Mac, and you’ll find
that you can move the cursor off your
Mac’s screen and onto your iPad’s screen.
You don’t need to launch an app first or do
some complicated sign-in process – it just
works. All the features of your trackpad
will be available on the iPad’s screen,
including the ability to select and drag
things around. You can even drag a file
from your iPad’s screen onto your Mac’s
screen, where you can add it to a project
you’re working on. For example, you could
drag a graphic you’re been creating on
your iPad into a Keynote presentation on
your Mac.
Universal Control works with more than
just two devices too, so you could have an
iMac on the same desk as a MacBook and
iPad, and drag and drop files seamlessly
between all three devices.
Another great feature is AirPlay to Mac.
If you’ve got an Apple TV, you’ll already
be familiar with how AirPlay works – it’s
a great way of mirroring your iPhone
or Mac’s screen, or casting movies and
photos to your TV for easier viewing.
AirPlay to Mac enables the same feature
to work on your Mac’s screen, so you can
cast media from your iPhone or iPad to a
Mac with macOS Monterey.
The next exciting thing about macOS
Monterey is that Automator, the Mac’s
long-standing workflow tool, is transiting
into Shortcuts. Shortcuts debuted first
on iOS, and enables you to automate the
everyday stuff you do on your iOS device
for peak productivity.
