22 Sets and Venn diagrams (Chapter 1)

INTERSECTION

A\B consists of all elements common to bothAandB.

It is the shaded region where the circles representingAandB
overlap.

UNION

A[B consists of all elements inAorBor both.

It is the shaded region which includes both circles.

DISJOINT OR MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE SETS

Disjoint sets do not have common elements.

They are represented by non-overlapping circles.

For example, if A=f 2 , 3 , 8 g and B=f 4 , 5 , 9 g
then A\B=?.

Example 6 Self Tutor

Suppose U=f 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 g. Illustrate on a Venn diagram the sets:
a A=f 1 , 3 , 6 , 8 g and B=f 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 8 g
b A=f 1 , 3 , 6 , 7 , 8 g and B=f 3 , 6 , 8 g
c A=f 2 , 4 , 8 g and B=f 3 , 6 , 7 g.

a A\B=f 3 , 8 g b A\B=f 3 , 6 , 8 g,
