Temples & Mosques
In honour of the goddess of mercy, good
fortune, peace and fertility, the Kuan Yin Teng
(Lebuh Pitt; admission by donation; h9am-5pm) was
built in the early 19th century by the first
Hokkien and Cantonese settlers in Penang.
It’s usually buzzing with worshippers burn-
ing paper money.
Built by Penang’s first Indian-Muslim set-
tlers, the yellow Kapitan Keling Mosque (Lebuh Pitt)
has a single minaret in an Indian-influenced
Islamic style. This building is best appreciated
from the street.
Don’t miss Khoo Kongsi (Lebuh Cannon; adult
RM5; h9am-5pm), Penang’s finest kongsi (clan
house), decorated with a colourful mix of
dragons, other statues, paintings, lamps, col-
oured tiles and carvings. A kongsi is a building
that’s used partly as a temple and partly as a
meeting hall for Chinese people of the same
clan or surname. This stunning building dates
from 1906.
Sri Mariamman Temple (Lebuh Pitt; h8am-noon
& 4-9pm) is where local Tamils pay homage to
Tamil Nadu by worshipping Mariamman,
a mother goddess popular with diaspora
Indians. This temple was built in 1883
and is Georgetown’s oldest Hindu house
of worship.
